Bendigo Won A Hard Fought Battle Away Over The Townsville Fire
In a thrilling finish to the game, the Bendigo Spirit edged out the Townsville Fire with a final score of 66-68. After a back-and-forth battle throughout the match, Bendigo’s sheer determination ultimately proved too much for Townsville in the closing moments.
It was a close match from the beginning to end at the Townsville Entertainment Centre. The two teams traded baskets as they sought a decisive advantage over one another.
With less than 2 minutes left on the clock, the Fire gain the advantage with some great offence which gave them the 66-63 lead. It seemed the game was all but over as the lead seemed insurmountable at that point. However, the spirit of the determined Bendigo Spirit responded by going on an incredible 5-0 run courtesy of the talented young star Anneli Maley in just over 30 seconds.
Bendigo won the game with a complete team effort led by captain Kelsey Griffin and Alex Wilson, each of whom scored 16 points.
Abigail Wehrung was the top provider with 4 assists for the Spirit while 24 years old Anneli Maley had a remarkable night with 12 points along with a massive 16 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.
Tianna Hawkins shone brightest for her team Townsville Women, leading all scorers on 21 points with 7 defensive rebounds. She was supported by her captain Lauren Nicholson who chipped in 13 points. Stephanie Reid also scored 9 points accomplished with 8 assists.
With this win, Bendigo Spirit remains the only undefeated team in the WNBL Australia this season. Meanwhile, the Townsville Fire now sits third in the point table.
Another match this week will see Bendigo Women play against Sydney Uni Flames in New South Wales. In the next game week, Townsville will visit Melbourne to meet with the current second-positioned team Melbourne Boomers team.
